7 Sci-Fi, Sky-High Cities Planned for China

As China rapidly urbanizes, the country has been able to make lots and lots of developments nearly from scratch. This has allowed architects to experiment with their own blends of urbanism and sustainability, as well as new prototypes for transportation and infrastructure.

These cities all offer us cutting edge designs and technology, but they also begin to take on many identical attributes. It would be very easy to dazzle developers simply by mentioning water, eco-friendly, towers, transport ring, cultural center, lake, and a host of other keywords that these tend to include. Also, your rendering should look like it came from Baidu, the Chinese Google Maps with a spectacular little city dropped in. Finally, a little environmental embellishment in Photoshop will have your eco-transport city ready to ship!

Here are some cutting-edge Chinese designs that have awesomely over-the-top renderings.

Yuhang Cultural and Art Center by Studio Marco Piva, Hangzhou, China

This plan includes cultural spaces such as theatres, a library, galleries, and an "art plaza", while incorporating the landscape and the lake into the design.

Masterplan for a CBD in Pingtan by 10 DESIGN, Pingtan, China

Pedestrian routes are prioritized in this scheme, which is organized around a central lake and park. Leisure-lined canals compliment a theatre, convention center, exhibition spaces, and commercial and cultural facilities.

Wuxi Masterplan by Atenastudio, Wuxi, China

A timed waterfall is part of this plan that incorporates the human scale into the design, as it mediates between water, land, and architecture.

Nobel Lake Park Redevelopment Concept by Daofu Lu, Shanghai, China

Here the park is the central element, and a range of amenities improves life for the residents while drawing in crowds from outside.

0728 Block Office Park by Blur Urban, Jiangxi, China

This relatively straightforward design places a group of towers on the waterfront, attempting to create a landmark.

Yunlong Digital and Technology Park by Nauta Architecture & Research, Zhuzhou, China

The concept is a "City Loop," with an ecological "Green Heart" in the middle. Infrastructure is organized around that central area, with connections to the airport and other major cities.

Summer Davos Summit Centre - Dongli Lake by LeRoque, Tianjin, China

The exciting rendering shows another radial plan with some spectacular lights. Greenways and waterfront vistas are integrated into the development.
